First meeting of lawyers network |

Armenian Institute for Development has undertaken the first meeting of lawyers’ network within the framework of the programme named “Strategic litigation in Caucasus” and financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting took place on 24th of February, 2007 in Yerevan, Congress hotel.
Overall number of fifteen lawyers of which mostly advocates participated in the event. Prior to the venue there were distributed content materials for participants which were duly selected to coincide with the topics for discussions. For discussions were selected such themes that had an urgent need of discussion and were most interesting within that time span. First topic related to discussion of the draft Judicial Code of the Republic of Armenia. The topic was presented by Arthur Poghosyan, legal expert of Armenian Institute for Development. Second topic related to changes that were done in the criminal procedure after Constitutional reform of 2005 and the perspectives for the development of the latter. The topic was presented by Hrayr Ghukasyan, the lecturer of the law faculty of Yerevan State University, chair of criminal procedure and criminology. Third topic related to the cases of the Constitutional court of the Republic of Armenia that were heard after Constitutional reform of 2005 which enabled physical persons to submit complaint that challenges the constitutionality of the law applied in his/her case. The topic was presented by Arthur Poghosyan, legal expert of Armenian Institute for Development. Fourth, the last topic related to first judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on Armenia. The case of Mkrtchyan versus Armenia was presented by the advocate Nikolay Baghdasaryan who was the representative of the applicant Armen Mkrtchyan in Strasbourg court. At the end of the meeting there were distributed questionnaires for the participant lawyers that have an objective to evaluate and comprehend some key factors that may influence the effectiveness of the cooperation of lawyers within the network. Moreover, there were distributed Strategic litigation manuals to the participants with corresponding announcements of call for cases and internship at Helsinki foundation for human rights (Poland). |
